Dyno testing & tuning a 2016, F150 Coyote 5.0L

Tony Lebrun rolled in with a big F150 Coyote 5.0L wanting to build more power and responsiveness. Tony’s F150 is a naturally aspirated, spotless, 2-wheel drive, 4-door.

After some warm-up pulls on the chassis dyno, we did a few baseline passes, pushing the 5.0L up to 5,600RPM. Tony’s baseline dyno results were 270 HP @ 5,600 RPM and 266 ft-lbs. of torque @ 4,700 RPM at the wheels.

We used a combination of programming platforms from SCT and HP Tuners to build several different tuning configurations that we could test on the chassis dyno. As we worked our way through the files, we managed to get the torque curve to climb from the baseline of 266 ft-lbs. to 305 @ 3,700 RPM, with HP progressing from 270 to 290 @ 5,800.

The most exciting result of the dyno tuning occurred at the 2,300 RPM mark. When Tony first came in, the 5.0L was only making 155 ft-lbs. @ 2,300 RPM. When we were finished, he was pushing 250 ft-lbs. @ 2,300 RPM. That’s a gain of 95 ft-lbs. of torque delivered right at the head of the powercurve!

From 2,300 RPM, the torque climbs steadily, with no spikes or dips, until it starts to level out around 3,400 RPM making 300 ft-lbs. From here the torque holds steady with a peak of 305.74 ft-lbs. And, it holds and holds all the way to about 4,900 RPM!

We were impessed by the Coyote 5.0L. Properly tuned, it is an engine capable of delivering, and holding, a massive amount of power right from the start of the powercurve and all the way to the redline.

When he first arrived, Tony had been hoping to make 280+ HP. He was smiling and laughing when he pulled away with 290 and a boatload of torque on a smooth power curve. As always, we waited for the call. Sure enough, we got the call:

It pulls like crazy at about 5,500 RPM and keeps pulling right through ‘till I let off! It just wants to keep going! And it pulls better and runs smoother at regular speeds. It’s ****** GREAT! Thanks again, I’m happy with it!

Tony was also kind enough to leave us a 5-star review on Facebook:

Great tune on my 2016 F150. Running awesome. Great bunch of guys. They gave me what I wanted and more. Went out of their way to make you feel at home. Thanks guys. Highly recommend them.

THE MAKING OF A 423HP BRONCO

Watch as we tune this Bronco almost to double the power of its initial baseline, producing an incredible 507.96 ft-lbs. of Tq and 423.24 HP at the wheels! On a snowy February day, Jayson Ziemba travelled all the way from Saint Clair Shores, Michigan, in his 2022 Bronco 2.7L twin turbo Badlands SAS Edition. Jason had found links to our two previous Bronco videos and, after several phone calls with us, decided to trust us with putting his highly modded ride on our chassis dyno for tuning.
